Project Wide Awake

Project Wide Awake

Problem Details

Fatigue is viewed as a hazard that needs to be prevented. Although there have been numerous improvements to fatigue management in Australia, there is still considerable road trauma in the heavy vehicle industry.

Process & Tools used:

  • Systems Thinking
  • Co-design Sessions
  • Useability Testing
  • Ideation Sessions

Solution Details

We reimagined fatigue management by applying a systems-thinking approach. This involved understanding the factors that promote being ‘wide awake’ or alert, engaged, and attentive. This allowed us to focus on a key improvement area: driver wait times. We built a tool that identifying the longest wait time for drivers so fleet managers could action improvements.

Outcome

  • One fully operational prototype wait time tool called 'wait loss' that was tested with fleet managers. We also conducted comprehensive engagement with drivers, gathering a database of knowledge on their fatigue and mental health.
