Project Wide Awake
- Safety, Simplification
Project Wide Awake
Problem:
Fatigue is viewed as a hazard that needs to be prevented. Although there have been numerous improvements to fatigue management in Australia, there is still considerable road trauma in the heavy vehicle industry.
Process & Tools used:
- Systems Thinking
- Co-design Sessions
- Useability Testing
- Ideation Sessions
Project Wide Awake
Solutions:
We reimagined fatigue management by applying a systems-thinking approach. This involved understanding the factors that promote being ‘wide awake’ or alert, engaged, and attentive. This allowed us to focus on a key improvement area: driver wait times. We built a tool that identifying the longest wait time for drivers so fleet managers could action improvements.
Outcome
- One fully operational prototype wait time tool called 'wait loss' that was tested with fleet managers. We also conducted comprehensive engagement with drivers, gathering a database of knowledge on their fatigue and mental health.
MTM Driver’s Guidebook
- Safety, Simplification
MTM Driver’s Guidebook
Problem:
Train drivers were overloaded with 140 procedures that could not be effectively accessed or used.
Process & Tools used:
- Simplification Process Visualisation
MTM Driver’s Guidebook
Solutions:
Using Opposite’s simplification process, we reimagined how the procedures would look across the day in the life of a train driver. We then simplified content, visualised the information and converted it to a Smart Phone tool.
Outcome
- One comprehensive, easy accessible tool to access procedures. One train driver declared "this is the best thing I've seen in thirty years!"
Project Simplify
- Mental Health, Productivity, Simplification
Project Simplify
Problem:
Complexity is at the heart of most workplace issues, including job demands, excessive workload, and communication breakdowns. These issues ultimately impact the mental health of employees, affecting their stress and wellbeing.Yet, organisations are not
becoming simpler. They are steadily becoming more complex each year, expecting people to adapt and take more on as well.
Process & Tools used:
- Systems Thinking
- Co-design Sessions
- Useability Testing
- Ideation Sessions
Project Simplify
Solutions:
Opposite completed a two-year major project for WorkSafe (as part of its Workwell grants program) that explored the relationship between workplace complexity and mental health.
Outcome
- Demonstrated that increased complexity impacted self- reported mental health and physical proxys of mental health, such as sleep and readiness (as measured using health devices)
- Developed a simplification intervention for partners Jemena and Metro Trains Melbourne
- Developed a portal to use our simplification assessments and planning tools
Fit for Fleet Safety
- Automation, Safety, Simplification
Fit for Fleet Safety
Problem:
Smaller fleet operators have limited time and resource for safety compliance even thought they recognise the importance. This leaves them exposed to potential hazards and serious penalities.
Process & Tools used:
- Simplification
- Ideation Sessions
- App Design & Development
- Co-Design Sessions
- Useability Testing
Fit for Fleet Safety
Solutions:
We worked with small fleet operators and our project partners, Sadleirs, Built Environs, ANC Delivers, Regu Safe Consulting, and Ben Bailey Consulting, to co-create a simple safety management system tool for small fleet operators.
Outcome
- An online tool and app that translates safety management system processes into action with simple checklists and a pre-qualification self-assessment.
